Having lived in this country for over 50 years, the sad fact I’ve come to learn is that there is nothing new about what we are experiencing today. Our government has started wars for money, turned its back on its citizens, and has even harmed them through unwarranted imprisonment and murder throughout history.
On the other hand, there have been members of our government who have worked hard to shed a light on these despicable behaviors and worked to help and improve the state of our union. Sadly, those voices are being targeted and silenced and discredited by the insane majority that has current control of the government.
This week alone, we have a US government that started an illegal war in Venezuela for its natural resources, shot and killed its own citizens who were simply trying to call attention to the abhorrent behavior by ICE, is threatening an illegal takeover of Greenland, and we have the least qualified secretary of health in the history of the US, reducing vaccine recommendations for our children.
If you continue to support the actions of this President and stand by the policies of our current Republican-led administration, you are morally bankrupt and complicit.
To the MAGA loyalists out there, my hope in this is that you realize that it is never too late to change your mind. I know how hard it is to admit you were wrong, and I know how difficult this is considering that the foundation of your identity hinges on your alignment with this regime. Even with all that said, there is strength in admitting your error, accepting responsibility, and working towards positive change. Plus, you don’t have to admit you were completely wrong; just start with standing against the murder of your fellow citizens by ICE agents.
In fact, you may be delighted to know that the ability to change your mind is a sign of intelligence. On top of that, you don’t have to align with the policies of the Democratic Party to disagree with your chosen political party. I never completely align with the Democrats. In fact, there’s so much that they get wrong.
It is time to wake up and change the current regime. We are neck-deep in fascism right now, and just because it might be comfortable for you or is not impacting you directly, you are incredibly shortsighted if you don’t think the barrel of the gun won’t be pointed at you one day soon.
Resist, peacefully protest, do something kind for someone, and don’t be afraid. You are not alone in this.
A hero of mine used to say, when things are scary, look for the helpers. I say, look for the helpers, and while doing so, become one yourself.
